Flexible and hydraulic erectile prosthesis – which one should you choose?

Penile Prostheses for Erectile Dysfunction

Penile prostheses are surgical solutions used for erectile dysfunction (ED) when other treatments, such as medications, local injections, or shockwave therapy, fail to achieve the desired results. There are two main types of prostheses, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice depends on the patient’s preference and condition.

Types of Penile Prostheses

  1. Malleable Prosthesis:
  • Consists of two flexible rods implanted in the penile cavernous bodies, maintaining a relatively fixed state, allowing the patient to manually adjust the penis as needed.
  • Advantages:
    • Easy to use, requiring no pumping or complex mechanisms, making it practical for individuals with limited mobility or manual dexterity.
    • Lower cost compared to other prostheses.
  • Disadvantages:
    • The penis remains in a semi-erect state, which may be noticeable to some patients.
    • May be less comfortable during daily activities due to its constant rigidity.
    • Provides less stability to the penis.
  1. Hydraulic Prosthesis:
  • Comprises three components: two cylinders implanted in the penis, a small pump placed in the scrotum, and a saline-filled reservoir in the pelvic area. The patient can pump fluid to fill the cylinders for an erection and release it back to the reservoir afterward.
  • Advantages:
    • Offers a natural-looking erection when inflated and a flaccid appearance when deflated.
    • Provides greater flexibility and control over the degree of erection.
    • More comfortable during daily activities as it allows the penis to be deflated.
    • Offers greater stability and rigidity to the penis.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Requires training to use effectively.
    • Higher cost compared to malleable prostheses.

Differences Between Malleable and Hydraulic Prostheses

  • Natural Appearance:
  • Hydraulic prostheses appear more natural, as they can be inflated for an erection and deflated to mimic the natural flaccid state.
  • Effectiveness:
  • Hydraulic prostheses offer better control, flexibility, and greater stability and rigidity compared to malleable prostheses.
  • Cost:
  • Malleable prostheses are less expensive, while hydraulic prostheses are more costly due to their complexity and advanced technology.
  • Comfort During Daily Activities:
  • Hydraulic prostheses are more comfortable for daily activities as they allow the penis to be deflated.

Tips Before Choosing a Prosthesis

  1. Consult a Specialist:
  • Patients should discuss with a specialized doctor to determine the most suitable type based on their overall health, age, and lifestyle.
  1. Learn How to Use It:
  • If choosing a hydraulic prosthesis, training with the doctor on its use is recommended.
  1. Consider Cost:
  • Costs vary by type, so patients should select a prosthesis that aligns with their financial situation and needs.

By carefully considering these factors and consulting with a medical professional, patients can make an informed decision about the best penile prosthesis for their condition.
